PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) – As the country gradually emerges from the coronavirus pandemic, food insecurity remains a very real problem for some families.

In East Virginia, some school divisions and local groups are mobilizing to ensure children are fed all summer.

the The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) has created an interactive map to help you find a convenient location across the country.


More, eligible households will start receiving P-EBT benefits on June 25, 2021, which will cover the months of October through December. Additional benefits will be issued on July 12, 2021 for the months of January to March and on July 25, 2021 for the months of April to June. Go to this link to find out if your student is eligible.


Here is a list of summer feeding programs available in our area.

Regional programs

the Southeast Virginia and East Coast Food Bank serves free after-school meals for children from June 14 to September 4, 2021 at various locations. Meals will be served on a first come, first served basis at participating sites.

Chesapeake

Starting June 28, Chesapeake Public Schools will be distributing meals at various locations and at various times.

Hampton

Hampton Town Schools offers free meals for anyone 18 and under until September 3.

There are six sites in the city.

Newport News

The NNPS Child Nutrition Services Department will provide take-out meals for all students 18 and under this summer. Take-out meals are available at the following schools from Monday to Friday from 12 p.m. to 1 p.m.:

Charles Elementary School, 701 Menchville Road
Deer Park Elementary School, 11541 Jefferson Avenue
Greenwood Elementary School, 13460 Woodside Lane

Newport News Public Schools also offers a mobile take-out service from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. Families should look for the familiar yellow bus at the following locations:

Marshall Courts Recreation Center, 3301 Marshall Avenue
Hogan Drive, commercial place behind WaWa

Norfolk

The Norfolk Public Schools Summer Meal Program (NPS) is free and open to all children 18 and under. Some establishments have started serving summer meals on Monday, June 21, 2021.

The summer meal program extends beyond schools to various recreation centers, camps, community centers and libraries across Norfolk.

No registration required; simply show up at a feeding site during service hours. Text “FOOD” to 877-877 to find a store near you.

The Norfolk Public Library and Norfolk Public Schools’ Nutrition Department are teaming up to serve free meals from June 28 to August 27 for children ages 2 to 17.

Children can visit a library branch open between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. for lunch and a free book.

Virginia Beach

Virginia Beach City Public Schools (VBCPS) will resume serving free summer food service program meals to all children at select VBCPS schools, from June 28, 2021.

Breakfast and lunch meals will be available for children 18 and under, whether they are enrolled in a summer program in person or picking up their meals through the pickup / drive model. Meal pickup service will be available between 9:30 am and 11:30 am, Monday through Thursday. There will be no meal service on Friday. Thursday’s curbside pickup bag will contain breakfast and lunch from Friday to Sunday.

Independence Day Meal Pickup
All schools and administrative offices will be closed on Monday July 5, 2021 for the July 4 holiday. Therefore, the on-the-go lunch bag for Thursday July 1 will contain breakfast and lunch from Friday to Monday.

Schools follow CDC and VDH meal safety and social distancing practices / guidelines based on individual school service plans. Meals are packaged and consist of fully reimbursable breakfast and lunch.

Each site has signage to clearly identify the pick-up location. We will keep you posted if the food service schedule changes.
