New York authorities warn of cannabis-like products ahead of Halloween
New York State officials are warning parents against cannabis edibles to ensure no child has a bad Halloween trip.
New York Attorney General Letitia James warns the public about cannabis edibles and hemp derivatives in packaging designed to resemble well-known snacks and candies that could intentionally or accidentally be slipped into candy bars .
In some cases, instead of “Chips Ahoy”, THC items are nicknamed “Trips Ahoy”, while “Oreos” are packaged as “Stoneos”.
“These deceptive products contain a high concentration of THC, the psychoactive compound found in cannabis. If ingested by children, THC can lead to accidental overdose,” said James.
“These products – which are illegal and unregulated in New York State – can be extremely dangerous to human health. The Attorney General’s Office (OAG) urges parents across the state to remain vigilant against the online sale of these dangerous and deceptive products. “
According to the Department of Homeland Security, the most common overdose incidents in children involve the ingestion of edibles made from cannabis, and these overdoses are on the rise.
In the first nine months of 2020, 80% of calls related to marijuana edibles to the Poison Control Center were for pediatric exposure.
In the first half of 2021, the American Association of Poison Control Centers reports that the poison hotline calls received approximately 2,622 calls for services related to the ingestion of cannabis products by young children.
“These unregulated and deceptive cannabis products will only confuse and harm New Yorkers, which is why they have no place in our state,” said James. “It is essential that we limit their access to protect our communities and, more specifically, our children.
“With the increase in accidental overdoses in children nationwide, it is more vital than ever that we do all we can to curb this crisis and prevent further harm, and even worse, death,” a- she continued.
“My office is committed to preventing the sale of these products and to protecting the well-being of all New Yorkers. I urge everyone to remain vigilant against these products and immediately report these harmful items to my office.
