New Jersey woman pleads guilty to thefts at Balenciaga in East Hampton

A New Jersey woman has pleaded guilty to helping steal nearly $94,000 worth of handbags from East Hampton luxury retailer Balenciaga, after which she and other suspects fled police at high speed. Suffolk prosecutors said on Tuesday.

Baseemah Davis, 34, of Newark, was among four people arrested for the March robbery, prosecutors said. Newark residents Ali Harris, 28, Jamal Johns, 26, and Wazir Rodgers, 25, have also been charged and have cases pending.

Davis pleaded guilty to second-degree robbery, second-degree criminal possession of stolen property and seventh-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance, prosecutors said in a news release.

“We will not stop holding accountable those who steal other people’s property. Not only did this defendant and her alleged accomplices enter a retail store and brazenly remove items from the shelves, they put the safety of others at risk in their attempts to flee from law enforcement. It could have ended tragically,” Suffolk District Attorney Raymond Tierney said in the statement.

“The message here is clear,” Tierney said, “arranged retail theft in Suffolk County will not be tolerated.”

On March 3, a woman, who has not yet been identified, was seen around 1:30 p.m. on CCTV entering the East Hampton Balenciaga store wearing a pink ski mask, talking on the phone and looking at handbags. hand, prosecutors told the court. documents. The woman then asked a store employee if her shoe size was available.

As the clerk retrieved the shoe, Davis and three people wearing masks rushed into the store and grabbed purses from the shelves before fleeing and getting into a Dodge Durango, prosecutors said.

East Hampton police located the Durango but stopped pursuing it when the SUV spun in and out of traffic at nearly 100 mph, prosecutors said. A state trooper also saw the Durango but stopped pursuing as the SUV was traveling at high speed. Prosecutors did not disclose who was driving the SUV.

The Durango eventually broke down on the Long Island Freeway in Wading River, where local and state police arrested the four suspects. The unidentified woman evaded arrest and fled into a wooded area.

Police recovered 34 stolen handbags, prosecutors said. Balenciaga handbags can cost up to $30,000.

Davis is due back in court on September 23 for sentencing.
