Morning fire in storage unit leads to arson arrest

A 60-year-old homeless man has been arrested for intentionally starting a fire at a CubeSmart storage unit early Wednesday morning, according to Riverhead Town police.

Robert Lazazzaro has been charged with Fourth Degree Arson following an investigation by Riverhead detectives.

A patroller noticed smoke in the Mill Road and West Main Street area at around 1:45 a.m.

The person was not injured in the blaze but was taken to Peconic Bay Medical Center with a previous unrelated injury, police said.

The Riverhead Fire Department responded and extinguished the blaze. The Riverhead Town Fire Marshal and Suffolk County Arson Squad responded to the scene.

Mr Lazazzaro was released on a Wednesday appearance ticket.
