Jamesport Fire District to vote on property purchase on Tuesday

The Jamesport Fire District will hold a vote Tuesday on a proposal to purchase a 2.35-acre commercial parcel immediately north of the Jamesport Fire District headquarters site on Manor Lane for $1.275 million .

The proposal also authorizes the issuance of bonds in the amount of $925,000 to finance the acquisition and the allocation of $1.155 million for the purchase of the land, including $230,000 from the construction reserve fund. The district has already placed a deposit of $120,000 on the site.

The District Fire Commissioners have agreed to seek to purchase the adjacent property when it becomes available.

“You have an opportunity to get the room next to you,” said Commissioner Charles Thomas, chairman of the Jamesport Fire District Board of Commissioners.

Thomas said the district has no plans to expand its current facilities or build anything new on the property.

The site is already set up with a warehouse and the district will make good use of it for storage, Thomas said. The existing facility doesn’t have much storage space, he said.

The property would also be used for parking and for conducting training exercises, Thomas said.

Commissioners are considering a 20-year bond, the president said.

“I think it’s a good thing. It won’t affect our taxes,” Thomas said.

All registered residents in the district registered to vote with the Suffolk County Board of Elections by February 21 are eligible to vote in the election.

Voting will take place at the Jamesport Fire District Headquarters, located at 25 Manor Lane, from 3-9 p.m. tomorrow.
