Heavy rains, strong winds in local forecast; flash flood monitoring, coastal flood and wind advisories in effect
Heavy rain is expected today as a coastal storm approaches Long Island. The strong low is expected to produce total precipitation of 2 to 5 inches, with locally higher amounts possible, the National Weather Service said in a statement. Precipitation rates can sometimes exceed an inch per hour. The heaviest precipitation is expected to occur this morning through early afternoon.
Heavy rains can produce areas of flash floods. Flash flood monitoring remains in effect until 6 p.m.
A coastal flood advisory is also in effect for northeast Suffolk from noon to 8 p.m. today.
Minor flooding is expected in the most vulnerable places near the waterfront and shore today.
Locally moderate flooding may occur along the westernmost shores of Peconic Bay, where road closures may be likely, vehicles parked in vulnerable areas near the waterfront could be inundated, and flooding could occur. also extend inland from the waterfront along tidal rivers, the weather service said.
The low pressure system will pass near the “landmark” off the coast of Long Island, creating a classic northeast. Northerly winds, becoming northeasterly this evening, of 20 to 30 mph with gusts up to 50 mph are expected. The strongest winds are expected to hit the area early in the morning Wednesday, according to National Weather Service forecasters.
A wind advisory is in effect from 6:00 am this evening until tomorrow.
A gale warning is in effect for Long Island Strait waters and a storm warning is in effect for the Atlantic Ocean off eastern Suffolk.
The heaviest rains are expected in the western parts of Long Island and New York, while the heaviest wins are expected in the East End.
