Dudley Zoo and Castle: meet rare beasts

Meet 200 species of animals and learn how Dudley’s conservation-oriented approach has won him awards. Endangered species here include Asian lions, Sumatran tigers and Borneo orangutans, as well as the largest colony of parent-bred Humboldt penguins in the UK. After meeting the animals, explore the 11th-century Motte and Bailey Castle, built by the French and later the residence of the Earls of Dudley. Today the castle and park are used for reenactments, events and bird of prey demonstrations.

This elegant Victorian house has a colorful history interspersed with stories of extravagant celebrations, including the Earl of Dudley’s 21st Birthday Party which lasted for three days in 1888. Discover the stories upstairs and downstairs of lavish entertainment, including shooting evenings attended by the Prince of Wales (later Edward VII). At its peak, the Court had a staff of over 100 people. Then, in 1937, a devastating fire reduced it to the impressive remains that remain today. Beyond the buildings, the vast gardens are a delight. Marvel at the Perseus and Andromeda Fountain, one of the largest in Europe, and stroll the lakeside trail.
