Fall waterline flushing program set to begin on Aquidneck Island

As part of the ongoing maintenance of the Newport Water Division (NWD) water distribution system, the City of Newport today announced that a water line flushing program in designated areas will commence during evening hours from Sunday, October 16, 2022 and will end on November 3, 2022. .

To minimize impacts to our customers, flushing crews will begin at 8:00 p.m. and continue until 4:00 a.m., according to a City press release.

Flushing hydrants is an essential part of ongoing water system maintenance. Rinsing has two essential functions. First is how we verify the system’s ability to support essential fire protection. Second, flushing purges the system of sediment and standing water. High flow rates drive this standing water or sediment out of the pipes through the flushed hydrant during flushing. These sediments would accumulate without flushing, leading to increased water quality issues, such as discolored water.

The water used during rinsing does an important job, and although it may seem unnecessary, the rinsing technique we use is effective and necessary. NWD customizes flushing procedures and sequencing each year to minimize impacts and maximize efficiency. During the process, we operate valves and hydrants, making sure they work properly. We spot check flow levels to ensure the system is operating to expected standards. It is an essential element and a planned investment in maintaining the health of our water supply system. Similar to how we brush our teeth every day.

Please note that the rinsing process may result in temporary discoloration of your water caused by small particles dislodged during rinsing, as well as a possible reduction in water pressure. We recommend that you limit water consumption during the main water line flushing period, especially for washing clothes when the water is discolored, and avoid running hot water. If you experience discolored or cloudy water, we recommend running the cold water faucets until the water runs clear. The discoloration of your water will only be temporary and is not harmful. NWD checks the water throughout the process to ensure safety. If the condition persists, or if you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact NWD at (401) 845-5600. We appreciate your patience as we strive to provide the highest quality water to our customers.
