Cutchogue Man has led police in a second chase and car crash since May

Southold Police say officers were involved in a car chase that ended in an accident on Saturday with the same Cutchogue man who led them in a remarkably similar chase and accident early last month.

Police say units responded to reports of a van being stolen from the Greenport 7-Eleven parking lot early Saturday morning, June 4. Police said they located the stolen vehicle, which then led officers into a chase that ended with the suspect crashing. a police car before being apprehended.

Following the report of a stolen 2008 Ford E250 van from the grounds of Greenport 7-Eleven at 7:22 a.m. Saturday morning, a Southold Police The officer located the allegedly stolen van traveling westbound on Highway 25 in Cutchogue and performed a traffic stop. The driver first stopped the van, then sped up and fled, prompting a police chase.

Police said the driver of the vehicle, Alexander Ellioff, 35, of Cutchogue, led officers west through Riverhead jurisdiction and onto Interstate 495, Long Island’s highway.

Eventually, police say Ellioff briefly stopped for officers around junction 69 on the LIE, then drove off again, hitting an occupied Southold Town Police vehicle on the shoulder of the road. Ellioff continued for a short distance after the crash before he was finally apprehended, police said.

After he was caught, police said they transported Ellioff to Peconic Bay Medical Center for treatment of injuries he sustained in the crash. He would be processed and brought to justice upon his release.

The police officer involved in the accident was not injured.

Police listed a series of offenses by Ellioff, including grand theft of a motor vehicle in the 4th degree, criminal mischief in the second degree, fleeing an officer in a motor vehicle (3rd degree) and 2nd degree obstruction of government administration.


This is the second car chase Ellioff has been involved in recently that ended in an accident, according to previous reports from Southold Police.

On the morning of Friday May 6, police officers in Southold responded to reports of a man threatening bathers at Nassau Point in Cutchogue. In a surprisingly similar turn of events, police said at the time that they located Ellioff who then fled in a white Jeep Liberty, refusing to stop for officers in pursuit.

This May 6 car chase continued to the city line on Sound Avenue in Mattituck, but police say Ellioff was apprehended after crashing at the State Route 25 intersection. and Edwards Avenue in Calverton.

According to police reports for this earlier incident, Riverhead Police Department response units held Ellioff until he could be arrested by Southold Police, who then took him to Southold Medical Center. Peconic Bay for treatment of injuries sustained in the accident.

Police at the time said that when arrested, Ellioff was found in possession of items broken into at two homes near Nassau Point Beach where he was initially reported to be harassing people.

Ellioff’s offenses on May 6 included burglary, uttering threats, resisting arrest and numerous traffic and vehicle violations, police said.

Southold Police did not immediately respond to comments regarding the status of Ellioff’s charges stemming from the May 6 incident.
