Cook runs in 2nd place for Old Saybrook in the United States; Field hockey loses in Shoreline semifinals

Cross-country skiing for boys

Sophomore Parker Cook took second on behalf of the Old Saybrook boys’ cross country team when the Rams competed in the Class S State Championship last week. Cook’s performance helped Old Saybrook take sixth place with a team score of 161 points at Wickham Park in Manchester on November 1.

Cook finished with a time of 17 minutes and 30 seconds en route to earning honors in the S-class competition. Cook only placed behind senior Sean Kennedy-Wonneb of Hale-Ray with his mark of 17:01.

Sophomore Ngwang Choegyal came in 23rd place (19:04) for Old Saybrook in the United States. Junior Logan Worman finished in 37th place (8:06 pm) for the Rams.

Junior Tyler Milardo-Denler finished in 57th place (20:33), and freshman Everett Miller took 58th place (20:34). Senior Zachary Nichols finished in 62nd place (20:46), while second Gabriel Rutan came in 63rd place (20:46) for Old Saybrook.

A few days after the S-Class Championship, Cook represented Old Saybrook at the State Open Championship at Wickham Park on November 5. Cook finished in 86th place with a time of 17:33 at the State Open.

Cross-country skiing for girls

The Old Saybrook women’s cross country team finished sixth in the S Class State Championship at Wickham Park on November 1. The Rams recorded a team score of 157 points on their way to sixth place in the United States.

Junior Catherine Minegar led Old Saybrook’s field to take 15th place with a time of 22:16. Sophomore Carlina Castro ran a time of 22:36 to finish in 19th place on behalf of the Rams.

Junior Vicki Carrica finished in 41st place (24:12) for Old Saybrook in the S class competition. Senior Caitlin Wiley finished in 44th place (24:37) and rookie Catherine Palement took 54th place (25:23) for the Rams.

Field hockey

The Old Saybrook field hockey team won a loss to North Branford in the semi-finals of the Shoreline Conference tournament last week. The Rams are competing in the S-Class State Tournament this week.

Old Saybrook was the No.3 seed in the Shoreline Conference tournament and faced No.2 North Branford in the semifinals on November 1. The Rams suffered a 3-1 loss to North Branford, who went on to claim a 2-1 victory. against Valley Regional in the Championship game.

Old Saybrook is the No.6 seed in the S-Class State Tournament and began the draw by playing a first-round home game against No.11 New Fairfield on November 9 (after the time of the press). With a win, Old Saybrook would face No. 3 winner Thomaston and No. 14 Shepaug Valley in the quarterfinals on Thursday, November 11. The semi-finals are on Tuesday November 16 and Wednesday November 17 and the class S State Finals will be held at Wethersfield High School on Saturday November 20.


The Old Saybrook-Westbrook (OS-W) football team hosted Conference opponent Pequot Ellington for the Saturday afternoon game on November 6. The Rams lost the game by a final score of 42-6 at Old Saybrook High School to go 0-6 on the year.

OS-W is hosting Valley Regional-Old Lyme (2-5) for a Pequot Conference Sassacus Division competition on Saturday, November 13. The game will start at 11 a.m. at Old Saybrook High School.

Football Girls

The Old Saybrook girls’ soccer team is competing in the S Class State Tournament this week.

As the No.19 seed, Old Saybrook (6-5-6) started the S-Class tournament by taking on No.14 Ellis Tech on the road in the first round on November 8 (after the time of the hurry). If the Rams won, they played No. 3 seeded St. Bernard for a second-round game on Nov. 10 (after press time). The quarter-finals will take place on Friday, November 12, the semi-finals will take place from Tuesday, November 16 through Thursday, November 18, and the championship game will take place at Dillon Stadium in Hartford on Saturday, November 20 or Sunday, November 20. 21.
