Boston man arrested in tragic shooting death of 17-year-old in New Bedford – New Bedford Guide
BOSTON, September 21, 2021 – The man charged with the shooting murder of 17-year-old Nalijah Andrade, of New Bedford, was arraigned in Suffolk Superior Court yesterday, Suffolk County Prosecutor Rachael Rollins said.
Messiah Leggett, 21, of Mattapan was arraigned yesterday on charges of involuntary murder and illegal possession of a firearm. Judge Diane Freniere posted bail of $ 25,000 and ordered Leggett to remain housebound, under GPS surveillance, and not leave the state of Massachusetts.
A second man, Kenny Jnleys, is charged with gun-related offenses in connection with the fatal shooting. He is expected to be brought to trial in Suffolk Superior Court on October 5, 2021.
Assistant District Attorney Andrew Kettlewell told the court that Leggett, Jnleys, four young women – including Andrade – and others were herded into hotel rooms adjoining the Regency Boston on the night of February 4, 2021. Evidence gathered during a thorough investigation by Boston Police homicide detectives indicates that individuals were partying, drinking and taking selfies – including photos of group members posing with a 9mm semi-automatic pistol that Jnleys would have had in his possession. At around 11:30 p.m., Leggett was playfully wielding the gun when Andrade slapped his hand, causing him to accidentally unload a single round of ammunition. The bullet hit the victim in the head, killing her.
âAt 17, Nalijah should have prepared for all the rites of passage that young people go through – prom, last year of high school, tours in colleges. Instead, her family were forced to bury their beloved daughter because of the reckless actions of others, âDistrict Attorney Rollins said. “We can never give back to her family for what they lost, but we will hold those responsible for her death accountable and ensure that those close to Nalijah and those affected by her death have the support and resources. that they need and deserve. “
Tina Nguyen is the assigned witness lawyer. Leggett is portrayed by Megan Stanley. He returns to court on October 21, 2021.
