Averages increase over the year for Aberdeen-Angus bulls at Stirling Bull Sales

Ahead of a record sales of females, Neil and Graham Massie, of Blelack, Dinnet, also produced the majority of the highest prices among Aberdeen-Angus bulls when selling to a maximum of 24,000 gns for their male champion, Blelack Prince Cartier.

It also helped capitalize on the averages again over the year for the 42 bulls sold, cashing a level of £ 6,413 – £ 1,362 ahead of last year for two more. There was a clearance rate of 68%.

The leader of the sale was a bull born in April 2020 from the first generation of sons sired by Blelack Dual Mine and also the heifer, Blelack Princess Caroline, which is sired by Weeton Evolution. Father-son duo, Alistair and Graham Fraser, Newton of Idvies, Forfar, brought this most expensive bull home to work.

The second best, at 17,000 gns, was Blelack Bright Lad, when Henry Duncan, Whitehall Farms, Kirkmahoe, Dumfries, placed the final bid. This bull born in March 2020 is the result of Tonley Jester Eric on Blelack Evolution’s daughter, Blelack Beautiful Lady.

Another son of Dual Mine reached 11,000 gns for the same house leaving the ring with David Strachan, East Shawtonhill Farm, Chapelton, Strathaven.

His purchase was a bull of the same age, Blelack Kasper, who was reserve male champion and junior champion at the pre-sale show. He is the first calf of Blelack Karisma, which dates back to Haymount Walarlo.

The last to hit the five-figure mark for this house, at 10,500 gns, was Blelack Earthquake when he was knocked down by Seafield Pedigrees, Attwell Farm, Seafield, Redditch.

This bull born in June 2020 is another from the same sire and from the “best family that ever existed in Blelack”, Blelack Evora.

The only other five-figure prize was 10,500 gns paid to the directors of the late Gordon R Brooke, Upper Huntlywood Earlston, which is managed by John Elliot.

It was for the bull born in April 2020, Gordon Eton, who was the sire of Rawburn Joe Eric – who has bred 25,000 gns bulls – and Linton Gilbertines Ella. The highest index bull ever sold from this herd, he found a new home with David Lindsay, Baldovie, Kingoldrum, by Kirriemuir, Angus.

Making 8000gns was the Reserve Intermediate Champion, Cairnton Emperor, of Ken and Margaret Howie and his daughter, Nichola, Lumphanan, Banchory.

This 19 month old bull was inside his dam, Fordel Empress, when he was purchased from Fordel Dispatch and sired by Cheerbrook Luther. After finishing second at the Royal Highland Showcase and first in his class at the Westmorland Show, he found a new home with Robin Lamb, Limetree Farm, Richhill, Co Armagh.

Kingholm Result achieved 7800gns for Matthew and Heather Currie, Skewbridge, Mouswald, Dumfries. Their bull of the same age is from the first generation bred by Ribble Egma, from the heifer Kingholm Rosebud, which dates back to Rawburn Boss Hogg. A MacGillivray, Beauly, Inverness, disbursed the money.

Another from the same house got 6000gns when the Scottish Government, Knocknagael, Inverness, bought Kingholm Pickup. This bull born in April 2020 is a son of Weeton Rocky, who was purchased as a calf with Ribble Petal Maid, from the Ribble scatter.

Harestone Dominator made its mark for June Barclay, South Road, Insch, achieving 7500gns at James Innes, Dunscroft, Huntly, Aberdeenshire.

Judged as the senior champion, this bull born in February 2020 is a son of Shadwell Earl and Liley Duchess, who was purchased during the dispersal of this herd two years ago.

Richard and Carol Rettie, Craigend, Methven, Perth were also in the money when selling Retties Prophet for the same price.

Their bull born in April 2020 was one year old champion at the National Breed Show held at the Westmorland Show this year, and is now heading to Orkney to work with Liam Muir, Upper Onston, Stenness, Stromness. He’s from Retties Pam’s 10,000 gns Gretnahouse Blackpot, which dates back to Billinge Magic Jack Eric.

Idvies Paragon produced 7200gns for Alistair and Graham Fraser, Newton of Idvies, Forfar. This 18 month old bull is of Thrunton Panther, who was bought here for 15,000 gns and Shadwell Black Broughton’s daughter, Idvies Parba. He is now going home with Colin McMillan, Tallant, Islay.

The same house produced another bull of the same age, Idvies Paradise, which made 6000gns when sold to Willie Brown, Laigh Drumdow, Turnberry, Girvan. This one is supported by local genetics, being the result of sire Idvies Pink Peugeot on Idvies Parba.

Idvies Premier has also made its mark for this house by securing 5500gns to GM Mitchell, Hilton of Carslogie, Cupar, Fife. He’s a son of Idvies Ferrari, Idvies Privoda, dating back to Instack Ely.

Not far behind, over 7000gns, were the best of Charles and Elizabeth McCombie, and their sons, Ben and Charles, Auchincrieve, Rothiemay, who now farm 120 cows.

This bull born in March 2020 was sired by Rodmead Primero, who has already bred bulls at 13,000 gns and from a purchased heifer, Cairnton Karisma. He’s another to go to Orkney, this one with the Rendall at Holland Farm, Papa Westray.

Senior Reserve Champion Rosemead January made his mark for Angus Stovold, Lydling, Shackleford, Godalming, selling for 6,500 gns to Ballindalloch Home Farms, Ballindalloch, Banffshire.

This bull born in January 2020 is a son of Lockerley Black Boromir, descended from Rosemead Jessica, who is one of the founding families of the herd of 150 cows.

Junior Breed Champion at this year’s Great Yorkshire Show, Carruthers Goldsmith, achieved a prize of 6500gns for Donald and Kerry Graham and their sons, Jack and Joe, Birsca, Corrie, Lockerbie. This 18 month old bull was the last son available for sale to Morven Kilo Master and Carruthers Georgie, who is backed by Rawburn Enigma. JH Strawhorn, Dalmakethar, Lockerbie, was the last bidder for this boy.

Peter and Jonathan Chapman, South Redbog, Strichen, Fraserburgh, went 6000gns for Ettrick Batman, by Gordon Gray, Sunnycroft, Lindean, Selkirk. This bull born in March 2020 is the sire of 17,000-gn President Linton Gilbertines and Ettrick Belle, who was the grandmother of the 10,000-gn Ettrick Batman sold last year.

The next best, at 5200gns, was JAC Papa Bear by Alison Cuthbertson and his son, James, Wester Balgair, Balfron.

Now managing 90 cows in their relatively new herd, this bull born in March 2020 is by home-bred bull JAC Titan and Gordonhall Proud Beth, who was purchased with the entire Gordonhall herd four years ago for increase the number.

Papa Bear has found a new home with Willie Shaw, in West Lethans, Saline, Dunfermline.

The draft sale of females reached 3500gns for Mosshall Red Skye of G & N Taylor, Parkview, Blackburn. This heifer born in March 2020 is a daughter of ML Red Loaded and Mosshall Red Skye.
